Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations
The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations contain a list of added safety rules that apply to all employers, employees, and commercial motor vehicles that travel across states lines for purposes of transporting people or property. The rules govern a variety of safety aspects including motor vehicle weight, insurance coverage, qualifications/disqualifications of drivers, health or drivers, maximum drive time, and more.
Federal Highway Administration
The Federal Highway Administration is an arm of the United States Department of Transportation that is responsible for coordinating with state and local governments to ensure the ease of access and safe travel throughout the United States. This administration is involved in a variety of aspects related to highways including Federal and Indian lands, funding, international border crossings, highway research road operation, congestion, and more.
Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA)
The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) is the lead Federal government agency that is responsible for safety among commercial motor vehicles. The goal of the FMCSA is to reduce crashes, injuries, and fatalities. The FMCSA achieves this goal by researching methods to achieve its purpose, regulating specific guidelines that apply to commercial motor vehicles and enforcement of the law.
Federal Safety and Fitness Electronic Records (SAFER)
The FMCSA’s Safety and Fitness Electronic Records System provides access to databases that allow users to search company related safety information. It also provides companies with the option to access necessary resources online. Some of the available online resources include registering for a United States Department of Transportation number, payment of fines, order processing for safety profiles, as well as access to a variety of forms and data.
U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT)
The United States Department of Transportation is the organization responsible for ensuring that the United States transportation system is safe, secure, and contributes to the overall United States economic growth. It contains several operating administrations that help achieve its mission, including the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration.
Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT)
The Georgia Department of Transportation (DOT) is the statewide governing authority for motor vehicles in the state of Georgia. All Georgia-based trucking companies are required to comply with the DOT’s rules regarding licensing, inspection, maintenance, and operation of vehicles registered within the state. In addition, those individuals driving trucks through the state should be aware of Georgia trucking rules and regulations to avoid violating a state law.
Annual Motor Carrier Safety Progress Report
The FMCSA collects data and statistics on trucks and buses within the United States and releases quarterly reports of its findings. These reports provide information on the number of truck and bus crashes in the quarter, how many resulted in fatalities, and how many accidents resulted in reported injuries. In addition, it records the number of investigations, the number of driver and vehicle inspections, new entrant safety audits, and violations that occurred during the quarter.
